“Shiatsu” combines the Japanese words shi (finger) and atsu (pressure) — literally “finger pressure.” The name says exactly what it is: a method of applying static thumb and palm pressure to points along the body, fundamentally different from oil-based body massage with its gliding strokes across the skin. Two schools, two experiences — suited to two different kinds of guests.

The core difference: held pressure, not gliding strokes

Oil massage works through motion: hands sliding along muscle fibers, producing that smooth, continuous, soothing feel. Shiatsu works through points: the therapist places pressure on one spot, holds it for several seconds so the force sinks into the deeper muscle layer, releases, and moves to the next point — a slow, deliberate rhythm, like playing one note at a time. First-timers are usually surprised that “the pressure goes so deep without feeling forceful” — that’s the signature of static pressure: no speed needed, just the right point and enough time.

For Tam Dac’s visually impaired therapists, Shiatsu is home turf: the entire method revolves around finding the right point — precisely what highly sensitive hands do best.

The practical difference: no oil, no changing clothes

Shiatsu is performed through clothing, entirely oil-free. It sounds trivial but it’s the deciding factor for many guests: lunch-break visitors who don’t want to shower before returning to the office; people sensitive to essential oil scents or massage oil on the skin; anyone who simply dislikes changing clothes in an unfamiliar place. You walk in wearing your work clothes, lie down, and 45–60 minutes later walk on — no trace except lighter shoulders.

Shiatsu or body massage — a rule based on the feeling you prefer

Love the smooth, warm, continuous “kneaded” sensation → oil-based body massage (Body Massage 60’, 199,000 VND). Prefer deep, distinct, point-by-point pressure — that satisfying “it hit the exact spot” feeling → Japanese Shiatsu, 45 minutes (189,000 VND) or 60 minutes (239,000 VND). If you’ve tried neither: desk workers with neck-shoulder fatigue tend to get hooked on Shiatsu from the first session — static pressure is unusually effective on shoulder tension points; guests who mainly need mental unwinding tend to fit oil massage better.

Before your first Shiatsu session

Wear stretchy, comfortable clothes (sportswear is ideal; tight jeans are not). Held pressure can produce a mild pressing ache at tension points — “good ache” is correct; sharp pain is not, so say so immediately and the therapist will ease off. After a first session, deeply pressed areas may feel lightly sore for a day, like after exercise. And as with every package at Tam Dac: Shiatsu is muscle-relaxation care, not medical therapy — guests with diagnosed bone or joint conditions should ask a doctor first and note it when booking.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shiatsu involve joint cracking? No. Shiatsu at Tam Dac consists of held pressure and gentle stretching only — no cracking, twisting or jerking of any kind.

45 or 60 minutes? 45 covers the back, shoulders and neck fully. The extra 15 minutes of the 60’ version typically goes to arms and legs — worth it for whole-body fatigue. For the broader duration question, see choosing 30, 60 or 90 minutes.

Does it fit a lunch break? The 45-minute version fits neatly if you work near Luy Ban Bich — book ahead via Zalo 0763.888.288 to start on time.
